Cloverfield

Giant Monsters attack New York.

Cloverfield, from director Matt Reeves and producer J.J. Abrams, revolves around  a group of twenty-something friends trying to escape from a monster destroying New York City. The cast features Mike Vogel(Poseidon), Lizzy Caplan(Mean Girls), and Michael Stahl-David(TV’s The Black Donnellys).

Cloverfield is filmed with a handheld camera manned by one of the friends, who is trying to document all that is occuring. Filming an entire movie with a handheld camera can either be very effective and add to movie, or just end of being extremely annoying. Luckily for the viewers of “Cloverfield” the handheld camera adds to the experience. It adds a much more realistic view to the movie and helps create some of the movies more scary and tense moments.

While the premise of “Cloverfield” may seem recycled and dumb, it really creates a atmosphere that is tense and suspenseful, along with a nice dose of humor. Overall “Cloverfield” keeps all of the viewers on the edge of their seats throughout the majority of the film. Sure the acting may be sub-par and sure the plot is really just these friends running from a giant monster, but “Cloverfield” accomplishes something not many monster movies can, actual tension.
